R.I.P. Beverly Sills

We are sad to report that one of the greatest voices in Opera has left us at the age of 78.

Beverly Sills died Monday at her Manhattan home. She was suffering from inoperable lung cancer despite the fact that she she never smoked.

Sills performed on a number of classic television shows and specials. My favorite was her teaming with comedienne Carol Burnett. She was also a special favorite of the Metropolitan Opera crowd.

Sills had the honor of interviewing singers on PBS and other outlets. She also served as the main host of the popular PBS Live from Lincoln Center specials.

Her final vocal performance aired on PBS in 1981 during a Great Performances episode entitled “A Lincoln Center Special: Beverly! Her Farewell Performance.”

Sills also thrilled European audiences with her energy and voice at famed opera houses like The Royal Opera in London and La Scala in Milan. No funeral or memorial information has been released to the press yet.

She will be missed.
