In Case of Deflation...

A great article in The Los Angeles Times gives some tips on what to do (and what not to do) in case deflation overtakes our shaky economy. Here are a few tips from the article:

  1. Avoid borrowing
  2. Don’t buy shares of companies with heavy debt
  3. Don’t worry
Sounds like good advice... all things being equal.

When McCain Robots Attack

I Can't Help It If I Don't Feel So Good

A little James Taylor describes my temperment...

I can’t help it if I don’t feel so good.

I can’t help it if I don’t feel so good.

If I had my way, I’d be sitting on the top of the world.

I can’t help it if I don’t feel so good.

When the anger comes in and there’s no place for a man to hide, when the anger comes in and there’s no place for a man to hide, would he do anything in the world to make him feel better inside? When the anger comes in and there’s no place for a man to hide.

Gonna sit back here, and watch this cloud roll by. Gonna sit back here, and watch this cloud roll by. The next time that you see me I should be shining like the Fourth of July. Gonna sit back here, gonna watch this cloud roll by.

I ain’t looking for details, won’t you just give me a clue? Oh, Lord, what am I gonna do?

I can’t help it if I don’t feel so good.

I can’t help it if I don’t feel so good.

If I had my way, I’d be sitting on the top of the world.

I can’t help it if I don’t feel so good.

Don’t feel so good, I can’t help it if I don’t feel so good.

Congratulations to the Philadelphia Phillies!

I have been hearing about the partying on Broad Street and wish that I was there to join in... have a cheesesteak at Pat’s King of Steaks... maybe follow it up with a Luigi’s Water Ice or a big pretzel with mustard.

Enjoy, folks. I’m with you in spirit!

Man Shot In His Own Front Yard

Sad, sad story in the Los Angeles Times about a 20-year-old man who seemed to have it all in life... only to be gunned down in his yard.

It was not a gang member’s bullet... but that of a police officer. Why was he shot?

He had earlier been hanging curtains and police mistook the curtain rod in his hands for a weapon.

How does this happen to a kind and gentle young man who never caused trouble, and had lived a good life? Read the article for yourself.

Obama Will Be America’s SEVENTH Black President

I checked out an interesting article at The Voice Online from across the pond...

They assert that there have been six African-American Presidents of the United States (I wonder if this includes Bill Clinton?).

They say Barack Obama will be the 7th.

R.I.P. Anne Pressly

Little Rock news anchor Anne Pressly, who was attacked and robbed in her home, has lost her struggle to stay alive.

The local personality had recently made an appearance in the Oliver Stone film based on president George W. Bush.

It seemed that her fame was about to spread beyond Arkansas to the rest of the world.

KATV, her employer, posted a memorial at their web site.

It is sad that such a young woman with so much promise was taken away from us...

Farting Lowers Blood Pressure

Founding Father Benjamin Franklin wrote the historical and hysterical treatise, “Fart Proudly.” But what Franklin may not have known is that passing gas can help lower your blood pressure.

A report broadcast by the BBC reveals that foul-smelling flatulence may help one regulate their blood pressure.

You can also read about this topic at The Money Times.

And, if you want to wear a shirt advertising your desire to fart proudly, visit the Dwacon® store for the Explosive Gas and Flatulence designs.

Tina Fey is not the only Sarah Palin Lookalike

Tragedy for Jennifer Hudson

We were absolutely horrified when we read at Los Angeles Times the shocking news that Oscar® winner Jennifer Hudson suffered a personal loss as the result of a senseless act of homicide.

Jennifer’s mother and brother were found shot to death in their South Side Chicago home.

Even more troubling, the nephew of the Academy Award winner is missing and presumed kidnapped.

We will be praying for Jennifer and her family.

Reuters video on this tragic homicide appears below:

Rosewood 2008 ???

We heard from New America Media that a white college student named Ashley Todd reported that a large Black man attacked her near an ATM.

The assertion is that a McCain sticker on her car might have been provocation for the alleged attack.

Subsequently, the true facts came out and Ms. Todd admitted that this entire claim was a hoax.

A report at The Associated Press provides additional details on this story.

The video clip below is an MSNBC report on the entire fiasco:

The $150,000 Makeover

We were all familiar with the changeover that Sarah Palin underwent as she transformed from the frumpy hockey mom she was to the mavericky maverick who despises those who consort with terrorists.

What we were not familiar with was the price tag for her new wardrobe. Like, $150,000 for a closet full of campaign clothing?

We read the story in the Los Angeles Times and it has been on television most of the day.

Now, ain’t that something Joe Six-Pack can relate to?

R.I.P. Dolemite

One of the joys of my misspent youth was getting into R rated movies even though I was nowhere near 17 years of age.

Closer to seven years...

Still, I got to enjoy the raucously raunchy antics of Dolemite... Rudy Ray Moore’s trash talking, kung-fu fighting pimp character.

Moore has exited the planet at the age of 81.

Iron Man Cast Change...

Iron Man...

An Iron Can...

I was surprised to read in The Hollywood Reporter that Terrence Howard will not be reprising the role of Colonel Rhodes in the next Iron Man film. That job has been offered to Don Cheadle.

Apparently, the switch occurred over money. You can read further details at CNN.

Verbal Faux Pas

Was watching CNN when correspondent Lisa Ling did a report from Palin country, she introduced her news report with these words:

I’m Lisa Ling in the Alaskan arctic, freezing my [[CENSORED]] off...

I wondered if Lisa realized that CNN is not only seen in the USA... and I wonder what our friends across the pond thought about that statement... broadcast to the world nonetheless.

In case you don’t get it... what Lisa said she was freezing off has a different meaning in the UK than in the USA.

$6.50 is the new Free

I ordered some shoes from my favorite company… I have tons of wingtips and other formal shoes… but I wanted some nice dress casual shoes. Well, the offer included six FREE pairs of socks… and since my toes and/or heels stick through all of the socks I currently own (hey, I’m a guy), it sounded like a great deal.

Imagine my shock at seeing $6.50 for each of the six pairs of socks on the invoice! What a clip joint!

Well, at least I did get 15% off the price of the shoes… so it wasn’t a total gyp.

Joe the Plumber

Back in the 1960’s, there was Josephine the Plumber. Well, actually... she was a character portrayed by Jane Withers, former child star and friend/colleague of James Dean who had great fame as the television spokesperson for Comet brand cleanser.

Josephine was a sexy gal. Well, she had vim and vigor. Well, anyway... she not only unclogged pipes (no, wait... that was the Drano® guy), but she cleaned the sinks and pipes. Or maybe she only cleaned the sinks? And since when do plumbers clean your house?

Anyway...

John McCain in last night’s debate talked about his good friend (whom he never actually met), “Joe the Plumber.”

Well, actually... he is Samuel J. Wurzelbacher... whom the New York Magazine refers to as the Britney Spears of Election 2008. Anyway... Joe had a bit of a debate with Barack Obama (who actually met Joe) about the Democratic Senator’s tax plan.

Joe the Plumber (who actually is not a plumber... according to Thomas Joseph, an official at Local 50 of the plumber’s union, based in Toledo) seemed put off by Obama’s plan to have America’s wealthiest citizens help pay for the two ongoing wars and he trillions of dollars of debt that has to be taken care of some kind of way. After all, Joe believes in the American dream that if he purchases a plumbing business, he will be instantaneously rocketed from being a working-class single dad into the quarter-million-dollar tax bracket.

Surprisingly, according to the New York Times, Joe has some tax problems right now... like, $1,182.98 in unpaid back taxes.

Senator McCain, however, seemed to take great joy in Joe’s questioning of Senator Obama’s tax plan.

Experts have, however, poked holes in Joe’s logic... noting that even if his planned acquisition and meteoric take-off of a plumbing business catapults him into the wealth he dreams of... he would probably still get a tax cut, not an increase.

But the Republicans may still rejoice in Joe’s comparison of Senator Obama with Sammy Davis Jr.

As in... tap dancing around issues?

Ahem.

25th Annual SAIFF

NO2... YES1 ???

I accidentally skipped a dose of NO2 during my morning of pumping iron... so I figured I could just take it later. Well, I kept forgetting and finally took it before going to bed.

Well, I guess when a dose of NO2 hits your bloodstream and there is no heavy weightlifting to put it to work... it goes to that other muscle...

Made it hard to get a good night’s sleep... no pun intended...

Talk about “all dressed up and no place to go!

Ariston Men Hudor!

Sorry, but that was the first Greek phrase I ever learned... from a guy named Mr. Layton. Years later, I got to live in Greece and to this day have a great appreciation for the land, the language, the food, and especially the people of Greece.

Well, apparently, Greece has become an irresistible locale for basketball players. I was reading in today’s New York Times about NBA stars who are being recruited to perform for European teams for bigger paydays and larger roles.

I was particularly jealous of Atlanta Hawks forward Josh Childress who received a great house in Greece and a multi-million dollar pay day. Who wouldn’t love that?

Republican Rage?

Obama may be all the rage... but Rage (the emotion) is growing among the ranks of the Republicans.

Remember when Sarah Palin went on and on about Obama “palling around with terrorists” to the point where somebody in the audience shouted out, “KILL HIM!”

Then, there was the audience member who addressed a network news cameraman as “Boy.”

But the bubble burst during a series of angry outbursts during a McCain meeting. We saw reported on CNN a woman say to Senator McCain:

“I don’t trust Obama. I have read about him and he’s an Arab.

To his credit, Senator McCain defended Senator Obama and even implored his supporters to be respectful towards his opponent.

The Original Maverick

John McCain and Sarah Palin have been throwing the word Maverick around more than James Garner did in the 1950’s. The real Maverick family is not very happy about that.

The descendants of the original Maverick, according to the New York Times and CNN, are taking exception to the current use of their family name.

Hmm...

Taxpayer Bailout Money Used For Eating... Drinking... and Merrymaking

When the taxpayers were settled with $85-billion to save AIG for backing shady activities in the “Shadow Economy” of Wall Street -- none of us realized that nearly a half-million of those dollars would be used to get pedicures, manicures and massages.

Wow! This company was on the verge of collapse due to some presumably shady business practices and now that they have received billions of taxpayer dollars, they took 150 employees to a Ritz-Carlton resort with a scenic view of the Pacific Ocean, and reportedly spent money on fun fun fun... including:

  • $200,000 for hotel rooms
  • $150,000 for food
  • $23,000 for massages and other spa treatments

What did the government do in response to this outrageous misuse of funds? Well, according to The Washington Post, they gave AIG an additional $38-billion.

Maybe they didn’t get a happy ending the last time? Well, maybe they will at another boondoggle they have planned -- according to Bloomberg.

ABC News reports that AIG is fighting back against allegations that getting pedicures, manicures and massages after receiving billions of taxpayer dollars was a bad thing. Hmm... wonder what kind of ammunition they will be using?

Meanwhile... if you want to learn more about the shadow market that was behind this global economic tsunami... check out the report on CBS 60 Minutes.

Country First

Well, according to John McCain... Barack Obama is the antichrist who will usher in the end of the world.

Kaboom!

Ker-blam!

Flamdoggie... Pow-ie!

I had heard similar blather from other people... some who earnestly wanted to warn me of the danger of a Black man (well, half-Black) in the Oval Office. Meanwhile, The Huffington Post provides more details on the latest smear tactic.

In the words of Harvey Birdman... sigh...

And now, a word from CBS news...

The Thrilla in Saint Louie

Tonight is a highly-anticipated moment... the one and only debate between vice presidential candidates Joe Biden and Sarah Palin. After a string of disastrous interviews on ABC and CBS... expectations for Palin are relatively low.

Could this be part of a strategy? Have Palin bumble and stumble through a number of interviews... only to see her get a second wind and hit stride tonight?

It will be interesting, to say the least. Some of the best analysis of tonight’s debate that I have seen is at the New York Times, including a video report. Check it out!
