Sound Familiar?

I recently caught an episode of “77 Sunset Strip,” credited as television’s very first hour-long private eye drama. This episode, filmed and broadcast before I was born, was entitled “The Fanatics.”

The premise was about a group of terrorists from the Middle East who plant a bomb that will blow up their enemy... plus a number of innocent civilians... in a hospital while their enemy undergoes surgery.

Hmm... sound familiar?

The bomb... which looked more like a Radio Shack transistor radio than an explosive device (this was, after all, the 1960’s), was strapped to the waist of the terrorist Kemal’s fiancéé (portrayed by a very young Marlo Thomas). She was told a lie that Kemal wanted her to blow herself up for the cause.

While Kemal commiserates over his love being blown up, his mentor says that her death will be for the glory of their cause. After the good guys find and defuse the bomb, we find that Kemal’s mentor is full of khara. Kemal and his woman see the light and go on to live happily ever after (this was, after all, the 1960’s).

Despite the laughable casting of actors like Bert Convy as Kemal and Joe DeSantis as Mustafa Caleb (this was, after all, the 1960’s), it was interesting to see that the more things change, the more things stay the same.

This classic series is broadcast on the American Life Network... which is available on many cable and satellite networks.

Remember the Guy With the Zipper Down his Back?

Hey, remember that cheesy show from Japan where monsters did silly dances while wrecking vacant buildings and the guy with the beta capsule uses it to turn into the guy with the zipper down his back?

I Don't Wanna Know

Not sure why this old song came to mind... prolly because of its message which is kind of like a Rock and Roll Cliff’s Notes to the Bible? Sort of? Kinda sorta?

The Passion of the Curley

Mel Gibson’s homage to the Three Stooges fell flat with true stooge fans... but a lot of people enjoyed it. Here is part one...

Eponymous Establishment?

We heard from CNN about the African-American woman was physically beaten to the ground in front of her child by a white man who reportedly yelled The N Word during the attack.

This occurred at the entrance of a Cracker Barrel restaurant.

Here is a tip. If you are Black, you probably shouldn’t go to places with the name “Cracker Barrel.”

An interview with the woman who was attacked appears below:

R.I.P. Henry Gibson

Say a Prayer... Go to Jail

Interesting item on CNN about a Florida legislation making it illegal to pray in school. Say a prayer... you go to jail.

They will probably have to arrest every schoolkid who is in class where the teacher announces a pop quiz...

R.I.P. Mary Travers

She sang with the folk group Peter, Paul and Mary during the turbulent 1960’s. She kept the act going for decades afterward. But sadly, Mary Travers has exited the planet after a valiant battle.

You can see a moving pictorial of this great musician here.

History Has a Way of Repeating Itself

It is interesting how some times things happen that should have more of an air of deja vu.

Specifically... the political and economic climate of today. A lot of things that we have been seeing, such as the embezzlement by Bernie Madoff and great debt incurred by war, have happened before.

Specifically, during the Panic of 1857.

1857?

That’s right... it all happened less than 100 years after the United States became a nation. And now here we are again!

I was listening to Billye Brim say that all of that in the 1800’s precipitated a great spiritual awakening in America. In these days where some of the most popular authors include Christopher Hitchens and Sam Harris... one certainly wonders. This is one of those things that makes us go, hmmmmm.....

You can read more about the crisis of 1857 at Economy Point.

Old Black and White Blue Eyes

There is a reason why Francis Albert Sinatra is my patron saint. This guy just oozes confidence.

The video below shows Frank in his mid-30’s... and with a mustache that I keep waiting for Mrs. Stordahl to wipe off his face.

You’ve Come a Long Way Baby

I vaguely remember my mom’s cousin singing this commercial jingle with a cigarette perched on her lips.

The television advertisements for this brand of cigarette portrayed smoking as a way of empowering women.

Mom’s cousin seemed to feel empowered. That is, until her lungs were destroyed by the cigarettes and she exited the planet.

And in case television commercials for cigarettes is before your time, you can take a peek at what we are talking about in the videos below:

R.I.P. Larry Gelbart

We were shocked and saddened to read in the Los Angeles Times that award winning comedy writer Larry Gelbart has departed the planet.

Known as the man who brought the motion picture M*A*S*H to the small screen, Gelbart had a long and distinguished career in Hollywood.

He will be missed.

R.I.P. Gertrude Baines

The world’s oldest woman has exited the planet just a short while after her 115th birthday.

The Los Angeles resident was fussy about having her bacon extra crispy and was blessed to see the first African-American enter the Oval Office before going to be with her Lord.

Read more about her at our friend Shavar Ross’ blog.

Rest in Peace, Mrs. Baines.

Randy Scouse Git

I am not sure why this song was in my mind this morning while I was in the shower. But, at least I didn’t go to work wearing a tablecloth.

An Oldie... But Izzit a Goodie?

In the 1980’s, a groundbreaking series launched... a sci-fi redux of the Nazi occupation and slaughter of the Jews... but now reimagined to fit the post Bush/Cheney and current Obama world.

V featured some of my favorite actors... including Michael Ironside and Richard Lawson with Robert Englund as “Willie,” doing a 180° turn from his Freddy Krueger character.

What will the reimagined series offer? Take a peek:

The Battlestar Galactica reboot was astounding -- a hallmark in the world of science fiction entertainment. Unfortunately, the reboot of Bionic Woman (starring former EastEnders ingenué Michelle Ryan) was reminiscent of the Hindenburg. So, how?

Remains to be seen...

Fans of Sci-Fi and fantasy genres are probably aware of the annual Dragon Con convention.

Many of them are in Atlanta right now, wearing some awesome costumes and enjoying a bit of fun.

Obama-Hating Pastor?

I am still trying to figure out what book of the Bible says that a pastor should make threatening statements against the President of the United States?

Third Corinthians?

Fourth Peter?

The Book of Mergatroyd?

Check out this video from Rick Sanchez...

More details at Rick Sanchez’ Blog.

Law and Order?

There was an item on WSB TV about a Georgia pastor who was shot when approached by plainclothes police in an unmarked car that did not flash lights or show any evidence of being law enforcement.

CNN also covered this story... and Rick Sanchez reported that the pastor’s final words were...

Who shot me?

You can see video of the incident below:

You’re a Mean One... Mister Grinch...

So, get this...

A woman in a retail store has a crying 2-year-old.

A 61-year-old stranger walks over and repeatedly slaps the child.

The man is now in jail.

If he had done that in the hood, he would be in the cemetery.

Word...

Read the details at The Atlanta Journal and (with video clips) at CNN.

Kerry Livgren

Classic rocker Kerry Livgren, author of rock standards including “Dust In The Wind” and “Carry On Wayward Son” is recovering in a Topeka, Kansas hospital after surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain.

Livgren had suffered a stroke earlier.

In recent years, Livgren has been a Christian rocker, singing for the King of Kings.

Say a prayer for this talented musician.

We will.
